Investing in the Future of Fire Safety Professionals
At CDS, part of the Obsequio Group, we believe in the power of apprenticeships to shape the future of the fire and security industry. Apprenticeships provide young professionals with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, develop critical skills, and build a solid foundation for a long-term career.
This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re celebrating our apprentices and the vital role they play in our business. We spoke to Neve Reid (Apprentice Administrator) and Kieran Pearson (Apprentice Engineer) about their experiences, challenges, and aspirations as they progress through their apprenticeships at CDS.
Neve Reid – Apprentice Administrator
A Journey of Growth & Confidence
For Neve, choosing CDS for her apprenticeship was a decision based on career potential. She saw CDS as a company where she could progress, learn new skills, and build a foundation for her future career.
“When I started at CDS, I was the youngest employee, which was quite daunting. But throughout my apprenticeship, I’ve developed my communication skills and built relationships with different people in the business.”
Adapting to New Challenges & Roles
One of the biggest challenges Neve faced was transitioning into a new team. Moving from Fire Door Surveys & Risk Assessments to working in the service team was a big step, but it exposed her to new areas of the business and different working styles.
“I now help manage administration for one of our big contracts, set up new contracts and work with more systems than when I first started. This role has helped me become more independent and confident in my skills.”
The Rewarding Side of Apprenticeships
For Neve, the most rewarding part of her apprenticeship has been the relationships she has built and the personal growth she has experienced. She strongly encourages others to consider an apprenticeship in the fire industry.
“An apprenticeship gives young people like myself the chance to learn, gain experience, and open doors for more opportunities. It’s a great place to start, even if you’re unsure about your future career path.”

Kieran Pearson – Apprentice Engineer
Discovering the Fire Industry
Kieran’s journey into the fire industry began with a strong electrical background and a desire to expand his skillset. With plenty of opportunities in the field, he saw an apprenticeship in fire safety as a natural progression.
“I chose CDS for my apprenticeship because I felt that it offered the best opportunities to learn and grow in my career.”
A Day in the Life of an Apprentice Engineer
Kieran’s days are dynamic and varied, with no two being the same. He travels to different sites, working on a mix of servicing, fault calls, and commissioning jobs.
“The variety of jobs and different fire safety systems I work with keep things exciting. You don’t realise how much you’re learning until you reflect on the progress you’ve made.”
Overcoming Challenges & Gaining Confidence
One of Kieran’s biggest challenges was building confidence in his role. Initially hesitant to ask questions, he soon realised that learning from experienced engineers was invaluable to his success.
“I became more comfortable asking questions and seeking guidance, which has helped me improve. The knowledge and experience shared by my colleagues have been crucial in my development.”
A Growing Role & Future Aspirations
Since starting his apprenticeship, Kieran has become more independent and is now trusted to complete jobs on his own. His ultimate goal is to become highly qualified and experienced in the fire industry, progressing through different roles as opportunities arise.
“The most rewarding part has been seeing how far I’ve come. Looking back at where I started, I can see the real progress I’ve made.”
Kieran encourages anyone considering an apprenticeship in fire safety to take the leap.
“With the variety of jobs, constant learning, and opportunities for growth, an apprenticeship in fire safety is an excellent choice. Every day is different, and you get to work in new places, gaining valuable experience.”
