At CDS, we believe in nurturing talent and supporting our team members to reach their full potential. Michael Storey, now Small Works Manager at CDS, recently completed his Level 3 Team Leadership and Supervisor Apprenticeship with a distinction. His journey reflects dedication, ambition, and the importance of apprenticeships in fostering both personal and professional growth.
Here’s an insight into Michael’s inspiring journey:
Taking the First Step
Michael began his apprenticeship in June 2023, embarking on this exciting opportunity after a pivotal conversation with Obsequio Group’s CEO Simon Abley.
“I approached Simon about my aspiration to move into a management role in the future,” he shared. “He enrolled me onto the apprenticeship to assist my development and give me the tools to achieve this.”
This proactive mindset set the tone for a challenging yet rewarding journey ahead.
Navigating Challenges and Embracing Growth
Balancing a new management role while completing his apprenticeship presented unique challenges for Michael.
“My apprenticeship was very challenging but extremely rewarding,” Michael explained. “As I was completing the course in conjunction with starting my new management role, there was a lot of pressure to perform at a high standard in all aspects. But both CDS and Skills 4 Security were very supportive and accommodating.”
This support network enabled Michael to thrive under pressure and develop vital skills that have directly contributed to his career progression.
Building Skills for Success
One of the standout skills Michael developed during his apprenticeship was public speaking.
“The course incorporates a lot of public speaking,” Michael noted. “I quickly grew my confidence in the area, which has been incredibly beneficial. The main takeaway from the course would be the confidence it gave me to carry out my role to the best of my ability.”
Beyond public speaking, Michael also learned to apply his new skills to real-world scenarios, positively impacting both his team and the wider CDS business.
Progression and Achievement
Michael’s hard work and dedication have been rewarded with significant career progression.
“When I started the apprenticeship, my role was that of a service/small works engineer,” he shared. “I have since been promoted to Small Works Manager, with the apprenticeship being a huge factor in my progression.”
Michael states his proudest achievement as seeing the tangible benefits of applying his learning in real-time situations:
“Incorporating aspects of the course into real-time scenarios and seeing the positive results they had not only for my team but the CDS business as a whole was incredibly rewarding.”
The Importance of Apprenticeships
For Michael, apprenticeships are a vital tool for developing the skills and confidence required to succeed.
“My apprenticeship allowed me to gain and develop the required skills I needed to effectively carry out my role, whilst also allowing me to gain real-time experience from my day-to-day work life.”
This blend of theoretical learning and practical application makes apprenticeships an invaluable experience for anyone looking to advance their career.
Words of Wisdom for Future Apprentices
To those considering an apprenticeship, Michael offers this advice:
“Grab the opportunity with both hands. I have gained invaluable skills and confidence that have allowed me to grow into my current role and hopefully set me up for future progression.”
Celebrating Success
Michael’s journey is a testament to his dedication, hard work, and the supportive environment at CDS. His progression from Service/Small Works Engineer to Small Works Manager demonstrates the transformative power of apprenticeships.
We’re all proud of Michael’s achievements and look forward to seeing his continued growth and success as part of the CDS team.
